PowerCranks and middle distance Running
As mentioned on our general running page, the three keys to running fast are good running economy, a good training base, and staying injury free. Beyond the normal issues of running fast, middle distance running combines the anaerobic stresses of sprinting and aerobic stresses of distance running. These combination of issues can be especially troublesome for the middle distance athlete because of the need to juggle both high intensity with the need for aerobic conditioning. PowerCranks are a real boon to the middle distance athlete because you can use them as a substitute for many of the high risk, high intensity drills done now while also using them to develop your aerobic capacity. And, at the same time you are reducing the "pounding stress" on your body you are working on muscle coordination patterns that improve running efficiency and form. The only difficulty is the runner must change the mindset that the only way to get better running is to run more or harder. Because of PowerCranks this old maxim is no longer true. While, of course, the runner must do some running, by substituting PowerCranks for some run workouts the middle distance runner can:
1. increase the intensity of their workouts
2. reducing the injury risk associated with increasing intensity
3. increase the duration of workouts
4. reduce the injury risk associated with increasing duration
5. work on improving running form
All that is required is a small but simple change to your training regimen.
If you have not seen it yet, we have made a video that tries to explain what is good running form and how the PowerCranks help achieve that end. The video instruction is by Aaron Thigpen, a record holder for his age-group at 100 meters.
And, if the runner is already injured, PowerCranks is a great rehab tool, allowing them to maintain good muscle endurance and running mechanics in a zero impact environment.
In summary, the secret to running faster, beyond normal improvement that comes from running more and harder (training effect), is specific training that improves running form, specific training that improves running efficiency, specific training that trains muscle weaknesses and ensures balance, and specific training that helps avoid injury. And, if the athlete is injured, specific rehabilitation training that helps ensure rapid recovery from that injury while not losing any running fitness. PowerCranks can help with all of the above.
